Corn Stoves are Here!

Peterson’s has just received a large supply of Amaizablaze Corn Stoves. Thousands of people are using the corn-fired stoves manufactured by Nesco to decorate and heat their homes instead of using gas, oil, electric, wood, or other energy sources that are increasingly more expensive.

Combined with the timeless beauty of precision-crafted, American-made stoves, it is easy to see how corn is becoming the economical fuel of choice. Keep a lid on energy costs this winter with any of the three models above, now available at Peterson’s.

Thanksgiving on the Grill

Looking for great food without a lot of work? Turkey and grilling go hand in hand. According to the Barbecue Industry Association, 84 percent of households in the United States own at least one grill.

This year, for Thanksgiving, consider using your grill to prepare that turkey. Add a few potatoes and carrots and you are set to eat. As always, grilling cuts the clean up time, so you have more time to relax and enjoy this year’s football games.

Christmas Canning

There is a new elegance about using your home-crafted products as gifts. Imagine the raves you’ll receive when you give an ice cream gift basket that includes a scoop, parfait dishes and your own personalized praline syrup.

Despite its hard-working reputation, vinegar is revealing its own elegant side. Infused with fruits and flavored with herbs, the new flavored vinegars are worthy of decorator status and perfect for giving.

Canning does not stop with salsa and sauerkraut. Gifts in a jar, which include cookies and brownies, are seen in every gift shop. All these things are easy to create in your own kitchen. For more ideas, join us at Peterson’s Country Mill for a Christmas Canning and Gift Demo, Saturday, November 6, 10 a.m. to noon.

Winter Birding
If you’re new to Minnesota or feeding birds in the winter, you might wonder what to offer. In short, offer seeds and water. Many of the birds we see in winter are seedeaters. They have to be: insects are hard to come by in areas that experience harsh winters. However, the trees, grasses, and wild flowers have just finished their yearly production of seeds, and this is the main kind of food our wintering birds live on. The hands-down favorite birdseed is sunflower. It attracts cardinals, woodpeckers, blue jays, goldfinches, purple finches, chickadees, titmice, and nuthatches. Sometimes the birds suffer more for lack of water than food. And they need it all year around, including during the winter. There are wonderful birdbaths and birdbath heaters available for providing unfrozen water in winter, as well as in summer. Check out the wide assortment of bird feeders, birdseed, suet and birdbaths at Peterson’s.

Lucky Aces
4-Hers with Spirit!

We, at Peterson’s, know that our agricultural future depends on our children. Beginning now and in our future newsletters, we will profile a different 4-H club. This issue, our hats go off to the Lucky Aces and their leaders Connie Williamson and Nancy Dyslin. The club has been in existence since the 50’s with 46 members representing 27 families. Their projects and accomplishments are many and varied. With a large percentage of members 12 and older, Junior Leadership is stressed. Many members serve as Ambassadors on a county level. The State Fair has a huge representation from the Lucky Aces. Community projects include work at a women’s shelter, jean quilts sewn for teenagers at Children’s Hospital, and winter survival Car Care Cans provided to Lake Elmo Car Repair. Along with the service, fun at the Arts-In and Share-the-Fun complete the year. Our thanks to the Lucky Aces who live up to their 4-H club pledge.

SHEEP

Sheep have unique nutritional requirements that are critical for successful conformation and production. Many people underestimate the quality of food they will need to feed. Check with Peterson’s feed experts on the quality and quantity of feed required for sheep. Sheep will also need a grain supplement specifically formulated for them. Peterson’s offers Hubbard brand feed with 17% protein or Peterson’s custom mix feed for orders of 500# or more.
