A Look Back: Sowing Grain
One in a series of vignettes of the history surrounding Peterson’s Country Mill.
The seeding of rye, oats, barley and wheat has evolved throughout more than two centuries of farming in America. From the earliest beginnings, planting methods slowly developed and improved.
Well into the 1800s, the most common form of planting grain was to sow the field with handfuls of seed taken from a sack slung over one shoulder. By the 1870s, new planting devices were being developed, such as seeder with a hand crank that would broadcast the grain more evenly over a slightly broader distance.
Another early seeder was fashioned after a wheelbarrow frame with an 8- to 10-foot trough resembling a rain gutter. Moving briskly through the field, a farmer was able sow grain more efficiently and evenly than before. This type of grain seeder was produced through the 1920s and continues to be a highly coveted item at antique auctions.
The grain seeders of the late 1800s more closely resembled modern-day grain drills. One model used tubes to deposit grain on top of the soil in front of hoes that covered the seeds. Later, the grain drill improved this method by incorporating hoes or discs that opened furrows in which to deposit (drill) the seed directly into the ground. Grain drills were purchased in sizes ranging from 6- to 12-feet widths and were pulled by one or as many as six horses.

FAQs on Fountains

Q
I just purchased a Henri fountain here at Peterson’s Country Mill, which I simply love. Do you have any advice on maintaining it so that I may continue to enjoy it many years from now?
A
In order to preserve your fountain, we suggest placing it on a stone or brick platform to prevent it from absorbing excess moisture from the ground. Also, avoid damage to the pump by positioning the fountain in a semi-shaded area, where it is less likely to run dry from evaporation. Make sure that your fountain always contains an adequate supply of water and check the pump filter regularly for leaves, twigs and other obstructions.
